The Indian Parliament's ‘special session’ or the "Amrit Kaal" session commences today and will stretch over five days. The session will begin with the ‘Samvidhan Sabha’, and discussions centering on the 75 years of evolution of India's parliamentary democracy are on the agenda. The special session is likely to be opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha, and BJP Leader Piyush Goyal in the Rajya Sabha. There are eight legislator bills that are listed, including a contentious one on the selection of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Union Government had previously unveiled the agenda for this special session of the Parliament, putting an end to days of speculation regarding the country's name change or a "One Nation, One Election" measure. On Monday evening, the Center will host an all-party meeting, during which the presented agenda will be debated and deliberated upon.

The legislative agenda will contain the appointment, conditions of service, and term of office of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Bill, the Post Office Bill, the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, and the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill.

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will meet in the Central Hall at 11 a.m. on Tuesday to "commemorate the rich legacy of the Parliament of India and resolve to make Bharat a developed Nation by 2047." This session of the Parliament will also witness the transition from the old to the new Parliament building on September 19, marked by a little puja, as it happened to be the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The leaders of the Opposition have referred to the special session of parliament as a "diversionary tactic" by the BJP Government and have stated that urgent concerns should take precedence. Senior Congress Leader Sonia Gandhi had previously written to Prime Minister Modi, outlining nine pressing issues for discussion in the special session, including the carnage in Manipur and the wrestlers' protest.
