Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal on Sunday urged people not to spread rumours over the rape and murder of the RG Kar Trainee Doctor, dismissing allegations of police trying to shield the other suspected accused involved in the crime. He asserted that the investigation is transparent and so far evidences have indicated involvement of only one person- Sanjoy Roy, who has been arrested on Saturday after scanning all CCTV footages and circumstantial evidences.

“There are so many rumours floating. They are leading to confusion. One of them says that three people’s semen have been found in the medical report. This is false. We are not trying to shield anyone”, said Vineet Goyal after meeting with the protesting medicos at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (MCH) on Sunday. Protest have continued inside the MCH on Sunday for the third consecutive day run demand for better safety for doctors, speedy trial and justice for the deceased doctor.

The Assistance Commissioner of Police Outpost at RG Kar was removed on Sunday evening, that was one of the many demands of the protesting students. Earlier in the day, Sanjay Vashisht, medical superintendent and vice principal of the MCH was shunted by the state Health Department.

The 31 year old second year PG training medical student was on night shift duty on Thursday night. Around 2am on Friday morning she had gone inside the Seminar hall on the fourth floor of the building which also housed the Chest Medicine dept. Arrested accused Sanjoy Roy, in an inebriated state had walked inside the Seminar Hall and perpetrated the crime. He was arrested on Saturday, less than 24 hours since the incident. “This is a very unfortunate incident. Like the protesters, even we are very angry. There is no space for such criminals in our society. But we can’t fall prey to rumours at this stage”, added the Police Commissioner.
