NEET-UG 2024 Controversy: Centre Revokes Scorecards for 1563 Candidates, Re-Test Option Offered
The Centre on Tuesday has informed the Supreme Court of its decision to revoke the scorecards of 1563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates who received grace marks, offering them the opportunity to retake the exam without the added marks. The re-test is slated for June 23, with results expected before June 30, as per the National Testing Agency. Candidates who opt out of the re-examination will have their results based on the original May 5 exam, and the counselling process is set to commence on July 6.
This decision comes amid allegations of irregularities and unfair marking in the nationwide medical entrance exams, with concerns raised regarding a question paper leak and discrepancies in scoring. The Supreme Court, while hearing petitions requesting the cancellation of the exams, expressed apprehensions about the integrity of the exam process and demanded explanations from both the NTA and the Centre.
A committee convened to investigate the allegations recommended the cancellation of the scorecards of the affected candidates, prompting the Centre's decision. Despite these developments, the Supreme Court conveyed its decision not to disrupt the counselling process, emphasising that proceedings would proceed as scheduled.
The NEET-UG 2024 exam, taken by approximately 24 lakh medical aspirants, has been mired in controversy since the announcement of results on June 4. Allegations of question paper leaks and inconsistencies in scoring have led to protests and legal challenges across multiple courts in the country. Petitioners have pointed out anomalies such as statistically improbable marks and instances where a large number of students from a single coaching centre secured perfect scores. They argue that such irregularities undermine the integrity of the exam and raise concerns about the competence of future medical practitioners.
In response to the mounting pressure, the Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for all related petitions on July 8, indicating a thorough examination of the issues at hand.
