Narendra Modi launches the “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana” to light up 1 crore households with up to 300 units of free electricity every month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana” to further sustainable development and illuminate 1 crore households. It is important to note that this project with an investment of 75,000 crores comes just months ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in which PM Modi is seeking his third term.

“In order to further sustainable development and people’s well-being, we are launching the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This project, with an investment of over Rs. 75,000 crores, aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month,” posted the Prime Minister taking to social media platform “X”.

The Prime Minister stated that the Central Government will be taking measures ranging from “substantive subsidies” to “heavily concessional bank loans” to ensure that the people of the country do not have to bear any cost burdens. He further added that all the stakeholders will be integrated into a National Online Portal which in turn will further convenience.

In his post, Narendra Modi outlined the steps to popularise the new social welfare scheme at the grassroots level. Urban local bodies and Panchayats will be incentivised to promote the benefits of installing rooftop solar systems in their jurisdictions. Modi assured that the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana will lead to “more income, lesser power bills, and employment generation for the people.”

“Let’s boost solar power and sustainable progress. I urge all residential consumers, especially youngsters, to strengthen the PM - Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana by applying at https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in,” added Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sharing the link to join the scheme in his post.​
