An earthquake of a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 hit Morocco on Friday, causing massive damage to life and property of the state. At least 2,100 people were killed with over 2, 400 injured. According to data released by the United Nations, more than 300,000 people have been severely affected by the earthquake.

The Moroccan Government said that it has deployed all resources to tackle the situation, and has requested the citizens not to fret and panic. “The Moroccan authorities have carefully assessed the needs on the ground, bearing in mind that a lack of coordination in such cases would be counterproductive”, reads a statement released by the interior ministry of Morocco. Rescue missions are underway as the quake has dwindled several buildings to dust, trapping several hundreds of people under the dust and rubble. A relief commission has been set up by the Moroccan King, which is responsible for giving relief to the survivors and taking in children who have lost their parents and homes. The state announced three days of national mourning, and the mosques have been requested to hold funeral prayers for the deceased.

Following the initial earthquake that shook Morocco at 11:11 p.m. on Friday, an aftershock of 4.9 magnitudes was experienced 19 minutes later. The epicenter of the earthquake was high in the Atlas Mountains. The USGS has reported that the epicenter of the deathly quake was roughly about 18.5 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, but Morocco’s seismic agency has flagged it approximately as 8 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. An earthquake of 6.8 magnitudes is considered to be strong. Moreover, the quake hit a shallow depth, making its impact far-felt and more destructive. This is considered to be the deadliest earthquake to have hit Morocco since the 1960’s. Rabat, Essaouira, Casablanca, Adagir, and other adjoining areas also felt the earthquake's tremors, that rocked Morocco on Friday.

Help has poured into Morocco from all quarters of the world. Nations across the globe have generously extended their hand of support in such trying times. Qatar, Britain, Spain and the United Arab Emirates amongst others have promptly come forward to assist Morocco grappling with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. From paramedics to relief in kind, teams of experts have been sent to Morocco by the international community. Several prominent faces have also come forward to contribute to the rescue mission. Portugal’s football star Christiano Ronaldo has offered his Marrakech Hotel as a refuge for victims.
