Mizoram raises concerns over the influx of soldiers from Myanmar, calls for Centre’s intervention

The Mizoram government has raised concerns with the central government, urging swift action to repatriate the Myanmar army personnel who have fled to India amidst the soaring tensions between the rebel forces and the junta regime in Myanmar.

"People are fleeing from Myanmar to our country for shelter, and we are helping them on humanitarian grounds. Soldiers of Myanmar keep coming, seeking shelter, and earlier we used to send them back by air. Around 450 army personnel were sent back," said Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma.

As per reports, about 600 Myanmar Army members have crossed into India and have sought shelter in Mizoram's Lawngtlai district after their camps were seized by the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group in Myanmar's Rakhine state. The soldiers have been accommodated in an Assam Rifles camp.

This pressing development has led to talks between Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the plenary session of the Northeastern Council meeting in Shillong. According to government sources, Mizoram underscored the importance of promptly returning the Myanmar Army personnel who have sought shelter in the state. This appeal arises from mounting concerns about the increasing tension and its potential repercussions on the stability of the region.

The military leaders in Myanmar are facing a challenge that has stemmed from a coordinated offensive launched by three ethnic minority forces in late October. The joint operation resulted in the capture of several towns and military posts, compelling the military personnel to evacuate the areas in response to the coordinated assault.​
