Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Abhishek Banerjee Smashes Records with Historic Victory in Diamond Harbour with 7,10,930 votes

Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), achieved a historic win in the Diamond Harbour constituency, triumphing over Bharatiya Janata Party's Abhijit Das by an astounding margin of over 7 lakh votes. This victory marked a record-breaking margin in West Bengal's electoral history, surpassing the previous record set by former CPI (M) MP Anil Basu in 2004.

Vying for his third term, Abhishek Banerjee secured a staggering 710930 votes, commanding a vote share of 68.48%, while Das garnered 337,300 votes, capturing a share of 22.03%. Meanwhile, Pratik Ur Rahaman from the CPM lagged far behind with 86,953 votes.

The Diamond Harbour constituency, established during the first Lok Sabha elections in 1952, comprises seven legislative assembly segments, namely Falta, Maheshtala, Bishnupur, Diamond Harbour, Satgachhia, Metiaburuz, and Budge Budge. Historically a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the seat witnessed a significant shift in political dynamics in 2009 when Trinamool Congress' Somendra Nath Mitra secured victory, breaking the CPI(M)'s ten-term winning streak. Since then, the Trinamool Congress has maintained its dominance in the constituency, with Abhishek Banerjee securing consecutive victories in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The constituency, which went to the polls in the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections on June 1, recorded a notable voter turnout of 72.87%.

Overall, the Trinamool Congress emerged victorious in West Bengal's 2024 Lok Sabha elections, defying earlier exit poll projections. Led by Mamata Banerjee, the party secured a commanding victory, clinching 29 out of the 42 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to secure only 12 seats. Despite fielding candidates in 30 out of 42 seats, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) failed to secure any seats in the state.
