“Judiciary should be free of Political Biases…” Mamata Banerjee appeals before the CJI and top legal luminaries

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday in a subtle messaging, appealed before the Chief Justice of India and judges of top courts that judiciary should be free from political biases. She was speaking at the National Judicial Academy Regional Conference in Kolkata, attended by the CJI D Y Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of the High Courts from the Eastern region, Judges from the Supreme Court and other legal luminaries.

Mamata Banerjee stressed on the significance of the judiciary in the society for rendering of justice, while praising the Chief Justice of India for his judgements that she claimed, had helped “uphold the constitution and the constitutional rights of the people”. She regarded the Judiciary as the place of worship, people look upto as the last hope for justice. “Judiciary is an important temple for us. It is just like ‘mandir, masjid, gurudwara and girjaghar’. It is our supreme authority for delivering justice to the people. I believe this judiciary is of the people, for the people, by the people”, she said.

After 2021 Assembly Election Victory, the Government of Mamata Banerjee had faced several setbacks at the hands of the Calcutta High Court on series of issues including “Post Poll Violence”, alleges issues of corruption, alleged recruitment scams amongst others. The Bengal Government had received severe blow from the bench of former judge Justice Abhijit Ganguly who had ordered CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in teacher recruitments by the state. Justice Ganguly, however later joint the BJP, contested Lok Sabha election on BJP ticket and is currently a MP in the 18th Lok Sabha. TMC had for long questioned the political interference into the judicial system, specially after Justice Ganguly had openly admitted that he was approached by BJP even before he had officially resigned from the High Court.

At the conference on Saturday, in folded hands , Chief Minister Banerjee urged the Judiciary be kept free from political biases. "It is not my intention to humiliate anyone but it is my kind submission that please see that there is no political biasness in judiciary. Judiciary must be absolutely pure, honest and sacred," she added.
