Social media went abuzz with the news of Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen’s death after an unverified ‘X’ account by the name of another Nobel recipient Claudia Goldin shared the news of Sen’s death on Tuesday. However, clearing the air of doubt, the death rumor has been debunked by Amartya Sen’s daughter Nandana Dev Sen, who said that her father is ‘totally fine’ and is ‘busy as ever.’

Nandana Dev Sen took to ‘X’ thanking the people for their concern and said that the news of her father's death is fake and that he is totally fine. “Friends, thanks for your concern but it’s fake news: Baba is totally fine. We just spent a wonderful week together w/ family in Cambridge—his hug as strong as always last night when we said bye! He is teaching 2 courses a week at Harvard, working on his gender book—busy as ever!”, posted the Nobel Laureate’s daughter, confirming his well-being.

“A terrible news. My dearest Professor Amartya Sen has died minutes ago. No words.” tweeted an unverified account ‘X’ by the name of Claudia Goldin sharing the news of Amartya Sen’s death earlier in the day. After which, the social media platform flooded with tweets of condolences, and #AmartyaSen started trending on ‘X’.

West Bengal BJP President, Sukanta Majumdar was one of the many people who had hopped onto the condolence bandwagon, sharing the news of Sen’s death on his 'X’ account. “The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living….. Dr Amartya Sen, your life and works will forever be remembered and will inspire generations to come…. #RIP #RIPamartyasen.” However, Sukanta Majumdar deleted his post after the rumor was debunked. In addition, several Indian media portals covered the news of Amartya Sen’s death, which followed suit and deleted their pieces.

Close on the heels of the tweet that took social media by storm, the unverified ‘X’ account by the name of Claudin Goldin posted another tweet that called the said account a ‘hoax created by Italian journalist Tommaso Debenedetti.’
