Internet suspended in Haryana’s Nuh after Congree MLA arrested in connection to July 31 violence

The state police have arrested Haryana Congress MLA Mamman Khan in connection with the July 31 Nuh violence case, which had killed at least 6 people including two home guards and the imam of a mosque in Gurugram, confirms ADGP Mamta Singh. Section 144 has been imposed in Nuh to prevent any untoward spates of violence, and security measures have been tightened. Additionally, the Haryana government mandated a two-day suspension of bulk SMS and mobile Internet services in the district to stop "the spread of misinformation and rumors." The Congress MLA will be presented before the court on Friday.

Late on Thursday night, the SIT of Nuh Police arrested Mamman Khan. The MLA representing the Ferozepur Jhirka constituency was arrested after a round of preliminary questioning by the police.

From Friday at 10 am until Saturday at 11:59 pm, mobile internet access has been suspended in Haryana's Nuh district owing to the possible rise in tension. The district administration imposed Section 144 in Nuh and urged that residents offer their Friday prayers in their houses. A directive issued by the authorities states that the suspension of mobile internet is due to an emerging scenario. "In order to stop the spread of misinformation and rumors through various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, etc, on mobile phones and SMA, for facilitation and mobilization of mobs or agitators and demonstrators who can cause serious loss of life and damage to public and private properties by indulging in arson, vandalism and other types of violent activities,” reads the order.

The violence that broke out in Nuh on July 31, after Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s rally was stopped by a group of young men claimed at least 6 lives and injured over 80. The violence spread to the adjoining areas and a mosque was set on fire and the imam killed. Shops were vandalized, cared torched, and stones were pelted at the police.
