Indian Embassy in Japan sets up an emergency control room and issues helpline numbers in the aftermath of the massive earthquake

The Indian Embassy in Japan has set up an emergency control room and provided helpline numbers for Indian citizens in response to a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the north-central region of Japan on Monday.

The notification issued by the embassy states that the control room is on alert and ready to provide help and immediate relief to those seeking assistance related to the earthquake and tsunami on January 1. The embassy has further advised their citizens to follow instructions given by the local authorities.

While no reports of any casualties have come to the fore, visuals circulating far and wide on social media show the destruction that the natural calamity has wreaked. The citizens have braced themselves for the aftershocks that may follow in the aftermath of the massive earthquake. In the meantime, the government has also issued a warning for a tsunami, which could be as high as 5 meters.


“Residents need to stay on alert for further possible quakes and I urge people in areas where tsunamis are expected to evacuate as soon as possible,” said Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The Japanese Prime Minister further stated that the authorities are taking stock of the ground situation and assessing the extent of the damage.

Earlier today, an earthquake of preliminary magnitude 7.4 struck the north-central region of Japan, reported by the public broadcaster NHK. Following the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency promptly issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas in Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures.
