Ahead of the all-important 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s incumbent MP from Bengal’s Jharkhand, Kunar Hembram announced his resignation from the party on Saturday citing "personal reasons."

Kunar Hembram tendered his two-lined resignation letter to the BJP District President earlier today. “This to formally inform you that I disassociate myself from the party effective immediately. The decision is due to my personal reasons that I have carefully considered, “read the resignation letter.

An erstwhile Maoist hotbed, the Jhargram Lok Sabha constituency in Bengal is reserved for the scheduled tribes and comprises of an important vote share for the political parties. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Kunar Hembram bagged the seat by defeating TMC's Beerbaha Soren by 11767 votes. However, the ruling Trinamool Congress performed exponentially better from the tribal belt during the 2021 state assembly elections.

Hembram is the first BJP Member of Parliament to have resigned ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Sources within BJP have told News The Truth that Hebram was not considered for re-nomination by the BJP central command, and that was also communicated to the former Jhargram MP who was upset over the development, prompting him to put down his papers. Sources have also added that Hembram has tried communicating with other political parties, however, he has not received any positive response as yet.

Reacting to the recent development, the TMC has suggested that Hembram’s resignation was prompted by the fear of impending defeat. “This is just the beginning. More such developments will take place in the days to come. Their own party workers have protested against leaders such as Subhas Sarkar, Dilip Ghosh and Sukanta Majumdar. Those who want the development of West Bengal cannot remain with the BJP,” said Trinamool Congress leader Shantanu Sen.
