“I accept TMC’s challenge” Justice Abhijit Ganguly, one who ordered CBI probe into alleged graft against Mamata Govt, is set to resign on Tuesday; his next move “coming soon…”

“I will resign as a Judge…”, days ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Abhijit Ganguly, the one who had ordered CBI probe into the alleged teachers recruitment scam in Bengal putting Mamata Banerjee government in the dock on multiple occasions, has announced his decision on Sunday. His announcement has stoked speculations if he would make a foray into the political arena for what he had called so far to take his “fight against corruption” forward and further challenge Trinamool Congress.

 “I will submit my resignation on Tuesday and there after I will take all your questions. I will not answer any other question today. Following the constitutional protocol I will send my resignation to the President of India Draupadi Murmu, Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud and Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court” said Justice Ganguly to a battery of media waiting outside his house on Sunday. 

Earlier in the day, while speaking exclusively to a Bengali news channel, Justice Ganguly, however had said much more than those few words. “Whenever I have tried doing justice, the ruing party leaders have made certain disgraceful comments. If today I have taken a decision, then they are responsible. They (TMC) have time and again challenged me that I should get onto the field and fight the battle. I have thought about it and have decided to fulfil their desire. I will thank the ruling party for making me take the decision. That journey starts on Tuesday”, said Justice Ganguly in an interview to a Bengali channel. When asked if he would join politics, Justice Ganguly said “I am entering into the field of politics but won’t confirm now as which political party”. He clearly named BJP, Left, Congress and other smaller parties as available options before him but ruled out TMC in no uncertain terms. 

TMC National General secretary Abhishek Banerjee had previously questioned the motive of Justice Ganguly after he had openly questioned what was the source of ‘huge’ wealth of the diamond harbour Member of Parliament. Justice Ganguly had previously given multiple orders against the state government of Mamata Banerjee, in several cases had ordered central agency probes. During the course of his adjudications, Justice Ganguly had time and again given interviews to the media, departing from the general convention where judges avoid publicly interacting with journalists. 

He has announced that he will resign on March 5 and then expect the announcement on his next move soon. But there are speculations doing rounds that his big announcement could come on March 7, the day PM Narendra Modi is slated to hold his third political rally in Bengal, at Barasat this election season.
