Five Terrorists Killed in Multiple Encounters Across Jammu and Kashmir

At least three terrorists were killed in a gunfight with security forces on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district. The encounter began late Friday night in the Chak Taper Kreeri area of Pattan, following a joint operation by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir police. According to reports, the operation was launched based on specific intelligence regarding the terrorists’ location.

In a separate encounter on Friday, troops from the Army's Rising Star Corps unit killed two terrorists in Kathua. Following the operation, "large war-like stores" were recovered, according to a statement on X.

Earlier in the day, two Army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO), were killed in an engagement with terrorists in Kishtwar district. The gunfight broke out when a joint security team, responding to a tip-off, conducted a cordon-and-search operation in the Naidgham area of the Chhatroo belt, linking Kishtwar with Anantnag district in south Kashmir.

During the clash, four Army personnel sustained injuries. Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar, the JCO, and Sepoy Arvind Singh later died from their wounds. Kumar was injured by splinters from a grenade explosion, while Singh was struck by a bullet in the head.

These encounters come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a major rally in Doda district. This visit, the first by a prime minister to Doda in 42 years, is being met with heightened security measures across the twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar to ensure the event proceeds smoothly.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections are set to be held in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the vote counting scheduled for October 8. This will be the first Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir in a decade, and the first since the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, which previously granted special status and defined residency rights in the region.​
