The Delhi government has urgently petitioned the Supreme Court to secure additional water from the neighboring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. This move comes amidst a dire water shortage gripping the national capital, exacerbated by the scorching heat. In its plea, Delhi highlighted the escalating need for water resources in the face of the summer temperatures. The petition highlighted the necessity to meet the essential requirements of Delhi during this challenging period.

Delhi's Chief Minister had earlier voiced concerns over reduced water supplies from neighboring states, particularly Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. He urged the BJP-led governments in these states to cooperate and provide assistance, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. "If the BJP talks to its governments in Haryana and UP and gets some water for Delhi for a month, then the people of Delhi will greatly appreciate this step of the BJP," posted the Delhi Chief Minister taking to the social media platform “X”.

To mitigate the water crisis, the Delhi government has implemented stringent measures to curb wastage. "Delhi's need for water has increased in the scorching heat. It is everyone's responsibility to fulfill the needs of the country's capital," the petition stated. These measures include imposing a fine of ₹2,000 on individuals found wasting water and disconnecting illegal water connections in construction sites or commercial establishments. The water scarcity has severely impacted several areas across Delhi, such as Chanakyapuri's Sanjay Camp and the Geeta Colony area.

This crisis unfolds against the backdrop of soaring temperatures in the national capital, with the mercury inching close to the 50-degree Celsius mark. The minimum temperature remains significantly above normal, intensifying the challenges posed by the prevailing heatwave.
