The death toll from a stampede at a religious gathering in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, risen to 121. Additionally, 28 people have been reported injured in the incident. Among the deceased, 19 individuals have yet to identified. A forensic unit and a dog sqaud reached the accident spot on Wednesday to collect further evidence.

Uttar Pradesh Police have taken action by filing a First Information Report (FIR) against the organizers of the congregation. It is alleged that followers of Narayan Sakar Hari, a self-proclaimed godman, attempted to conceal evidence of the stampede by discarding victims' belongings in nearby fields with standing crops. The FIR specifically names Devprakash Mathur, the main organizer, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The incident unfolded during a 'satsang' (prayer meeting) organized by Narayan Sakar Hari in Fulrai village, attracting a massive crowd estimated at over one lakh attendees, predominantly women.

The organizers reportedly sought permission for a gathering of around 80,000 people, but the actual turnout swelled to approximately 2.5 lakh, causing severe traffic congestion and halting vehicular movement. After the event concluded, attempts to manage the dispersing crowd led to chaos, resulting in people being crushed, especially those seated on the ground.

The police are now searching for Narayan Sakar Hari, who was not found at his ashram in Mainpuri district following the incident. In response to the tragedy, the district administration has set up helplines to aid the public.
