Chhattisgarh: Two, Including Emergency Helpline Driver Arrested in Korba Gang Rape Case

Police in Chhattisgarh's Korba district have arrested two men, one of whom is a driver for the Dial 112 emergency helpline, on suspicion of gang-raping a 19-year-old woman. The accused were arrested on Saturday, with authorities confirming that a hunt is ongoing for three additional suspects linked to the crime.

The reported attack unfolded on Thursday night in an area under the Bankimongra police station's oversight. A preliminary zero First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Civil Lines station after the woman lodged her complaint, before being forwarded to Bankimongra for official registration the following day.

Superintendent of Police Siddharth Tiwari said, "The main accused and another suspect are being questioned, and [we] assured that the remaining accused will be arrested soon."

According to the investigation, the woman received a call from the lead suspect, the Dial 112 driver, around 11pm, who persuaded her to meet at a secluded housing unit in the Banki locality. Once there, she was allegedly assaulted by the driver and his four accomplices.

The assailants reportedly escaped after the incident, leaving the woman in an unconscious condition at the site. She later came to, returned to her residence, and confided in her family about the ordeal. Her family members rushed her to the local medical college hospital, where she is receiving ongoing medical attention.

Medical personnel at the facility informed the police, which led to the involvement of higher-ranking officers. Under instructions from the district's superintendent of police, a specialised unit was established to track down those responsible. Subsequent police operations included targeted raids, culminating in the capture of the two suspects, among them the emergency service driver.​
