Centre forms panel to monitor situation on India-Bangladesh border, announces Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Indian government on Friday set up a panel to monitor the ongoing situation on the border of India and Bangladesh, claimed Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This came a day after Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed the responsibility of the chief of the interim government, equivalent to the post of the Prime Minister. Weeks of violence had forced Sheikh Hasina to resign and leave the country, plunging Bangladesh into political flux. In the follow up there has been an escalation of violence and attacks on minorities that had forced people to flee looking for shelter. Fearing there could be an exodus from the trouble-torn land, migrating illegally into India, the Border Security Force (BSF) has upped their vigilance to thwart such efforts.

“In the wake of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Modi government has constituted a committee to monitor the current situation on the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB). The committee will maintain communication channels with their counterpart authorities in Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals, Hindus, and other minority communities living there. The committee will be headed by the ADG, Border Security Force, Eastern Command”, said Amit Shah in a post on X

The Security Agencies have warned BSF (Border Security Force) that around 1,200 prisoners have escaped jails in Bangladesh which includes terrorists as well and they could attempt to infiltrate in to India. Thus, the BSF has increased security and vigil along the borders adjoining Bangladesh.

According to the BSF officials, the shops along the Bangladeshi border have been ordered to close down by 9 p.m. The BSF has also asked the locals residing along the international border of India and Bangladesh to not undertake any kind of unnecessary movement in the frontier areas specifically during late evening and night.

The External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar while addressing the Parliament on Tuesday had said that the Union government is monitoring every possible situation in Bangladesh with regard to the protection of minorities.

"My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development.", wrote the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X while congratulating Yunus on becoming the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government.

Bangladesh is in the grip of a huge political turmoil since students erupted in protest against the Sheikh Hasina government over the ‘quota row’ and after the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India. More than 450 people have lost their lives in the past few weeks of violence taking place since July. After Sheikh Hasina’s exit from the country, there had been multiple incidents of vicious attacks on Hindus and other minorities and their properties being vandalized. According to BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh), several prisoners have escaped from various jails namely Narsingi, Sherpur, Satkhira, Kushtia and Kashimpur.​
