The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed following a collision with a ship, as confirmed by the Maryland Transportation Authority early on Tuesday. The incident, reported around 1:35 a.m., prompted immediate rescue efforts and emergency response. The MTA warned drivers to steer clear of the interstate highway over the Patapsco River, labeling the area as an "active scene" due to the incident. A spokesperson from the Baltimore Police Department informed NBC News that there could be people in the river following the partial bridge collapse. A video captured the moment when the bridge partially crumbled after being struck by the container ship has gone viral on social media.

Both Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr took stock of the incident and stated that rescue operations were underway. Olszewski shared a message on social media, urging prayers for those affected by the unfolding events.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, spanning 3 km and part of the I-95 interstate, serves as a critical north-south route on the east coast of the United States, stretching from Miami, Florida to Maine. The bridge's collapse occurred following a collision with a vessel, leading to its collapse into the Patapsco River. After the partial bridge collapse, the lanes leading to the bridge have been closed and the traffic has been diverted.

Emergency responders, including the Coast Guard and fire department, have stated that the incident is a mass casualty event. Reports indicate that multiple people and vehicles have fallen into the river, prompting a multi-agency rescue operation. Chief Kevin Cartwright of the Baltimore City Fire Department confirmed ongoing efforts, with collaboration from various Maryland agencies and the US Coastguard.
