Former Calcutta High Court judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Thursday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, days after he had tendered his resignation to the President of India. Copies of his resignation were also sent to the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

“Today, a new chapter in my life, a new chapter in politics has unfolded before me. I will do my best to work for justice in whatever role that I will be given by the party. Our motive is to remove the corrupt government ruling the state, to start the process of their removal from this upcoming Lok Sabha election, and to ensure that they can be ousted by the 2026 Assembly Election. BJP needs to come to power for the welfare of the people of Bengal, and so I have joined BJP to actively fight against the corrupt state government,” said Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay after joining BJP at the party office in Kolkata.

The former Calcutta High Court judge on Tuesday informed that he would be joining the saffron party on March 7 to further strengthen his fight against the “corrupt” Trinamool Congress government ruling the state. “I will join BJP on March 7…The ruling Trinamool Congress government has humiliated me on many occasions and even challenged me to join the battle on the field, therefore here I am joining the battlefield to actively fight against TMC’s corrupt politics…I took the past 7 days to decide the course of my future, and I decided to join the BJP. I approached the BJP and so did the BJP approach me it was a both-way deal,” said Justice Gangopadhyay after tendering his resignation.

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had conveyed his intent to submit his resignation on Sunday while hinting at making a foray into politics. He submitted his resignation on Tuesday, hours before he announced that he would be joining the BJP. The former Calcutta High Court judge is known for his controversial rulings. He had faced severe backlash for giving a TV interview about the alleged 'school jobs for cash scam,' where he had discussed the purported involvement of TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The Supreme Court had then warned against judges speaking to the media.
