"A befitting reply to terrorists...": Operation Sindoor Takes Centre Stage in PM Modi’s Independence Day Address

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on India’s 79th Independence Day, placed Operation Sindoor at the heart of his speech, celebrating it as a defining moment in the country’s evolving approach to national security.

The theme of this year’s Independence Day celebrations was ‘Naya Bharat’ (New India), but it was the military offensive, Operation Sindoor, that stole the spotlight. Conducted between 7–10 May in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, the operation was hailed by the Prime Minister as a bold step in India's fight against terrorism. “Today, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I have the opportunity to salute the brave soldiers of Operation Sindoor,” said PM Modi. “They gave a befitting reply to terrorists and demolished terror launch pads in Pakistan," he added.

The Prime Minister emphasised that India has set a “new normal” in responding to terrorism. Referring to the Pahalgam attack on 22 April, in which 26 people were killed, he underlined that the nation's response was deliberate, swift, and decisive. “Our country has been facing terrorism for decades, but now we have set a new normal. If the enemy tries any misadventure, our military will decide the time and place of response,” he stated.

Modi confirmed that following the Pahalgam killings, the armed forces were given a "free hand” to respond. What followed, he said, stunned the world. “The entire nation was seething with anger, and the whole world watched in astonishment. Operation Sindoor emerged from that anger. Our defence forces did what had never been done before they went several kilometres into Pakistan and destroyed terrorist camps," said the Prime Minister.

In addition, the Prime Minister also revived a longstanding refrain in India-Pakistan relations: the tension between terror and water cooperation. “India has decided that blood and water cannot flow together,” he declared, reiterating a sentiment he has previously voiced in the context of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Calling the treaty “unjust and one-sided”, he announced that its suspension had redirected valuable water resources back to Indian farmers. “The water that had been flowing to the enemy is now rightfully helping the farmers of our country,” Modi said.

He also warned against any attempts at nuclear intimidation, stating firmly, “India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail.”

The Red Fort itself became a visual homage to Operation Sindoor. A second flag, the red insignia of Operation Sindoor, was flown alongside the Tricolour. As the national flag was unfurled, two Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters soared above, one showering rose petals beside the Tricolour, the other flying the Operation Sindoor banner. Wing Commanders Vinay Poonia and Aditya Jaiswal piloted the aircraft.

A large backdrop behind the stage featured the words ‘Nation First’, with the Operation Sindoor logo prominently displayed in the top right corner. Elsewhere, floral arrangements spelt out ‘Operation Sindoor’, adorned with red sindoor motifs symbolising sacrifice and valour.

The official invitation cards for the Independence Day celebrations also featured the Operation Sindoor emblem, reflecting its prominence in this year’s national narrative.

Joining PM Modi at the Red Fort were Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the three service chiefs who had overseen Operation Sindoor. Upon arrival, the Prime Minister inspected the Guard of Honour and exchanged greetings with the military leadership.

Beyond national defence, Modi linked the spirit of Operation Sindoor to a broader vision of a confident and self-reliant India. He declared that just as India had redefined the rules in matters of security, it would similarly reshape its position in the global economy. “With equal grit and determination, the country will soon be unstoppable in commanding global markets with home-grown products,” he vowed, even as he alluded to recent tariff and penalty threats from the United States.
