7.4 magnitude earthquake hits Japan, tsunami warning issued

An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 7.4 struck the north-central region of Japan on Monday, reported by the public broadcaster NHK. Following the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency promptly issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas in Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures.

The weather agency has informed that tsunamis of up to 5 meters high are expected to reach Noto in Ishikawa Prefecture. NHK further reported that waves exceeding 1 meter in height have already impacted the coast of Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture.

In response to the seismic activity, Hokuriku Electric Power has initiated checks for any irregularities at its nuclear power plants. The region is currently on high alert as authorities and residents brace for potential aftershocks and monitor the situation closely.
