22 killed and dozens injured in mass shooting in Lewiston, USA

At least 22 people were killed and dozens injured in a mass shooting incident in a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, USA on Wednesday. Robert Card, a 40-year-old US Army Reserve as a “person of interest” by the police in relation to this incident.


According to State officials, at around 6:56 p.m. ET on Wednesday (4:26 a.m. IST on Thursday), shootings began in Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley on Mollison Way, and Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant on Lincoln Street in Lewiston. The Lewiston Police Department then released photos of a bearded man holding a gun on Facebook, urging people to contact the police if they see the man in the photo. This was followed by a photo of a white SUV with a bumper painted black that the police were looking for. The State Police confirmed this to be the suspect’s car. Two hours later, the police released another photo, this time a headshot of a man, identifying him as Robert Card, 40, a “person of interest” regarding the mass shooting incident. The bulletin said Card was to be considered “armed and dangerous”


Robert Card is a firearms instructor in the US Army Reserve. In the past, he was arrested on Domestic violence charges. Card had recently reported mental health issues like hearing voices. He had also threatened to shoot up the National Guard Base in Saco at one point. According to reports from the Maine Information and Analysis Center, he had been at a mental health facility for two weeks earlier this year and was subsequently released.


Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said in a press conference that hundreds of police officers have been deployed to look for the person of interest. Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline said he is heartbroken for the city and urged the people to follow the recommended guidelines. US President Joe Biden has also reportedly been briefed.
