12 BJP MPs, including Union Ministers, resign after state election triumphs

12 BJP Members of Parliament, including Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Patel, who contested and emerged victorious in the state assembly elections in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, turned in their resignations from Parliament on Wednesday.

The 12 MPs who have resigned include Rakesh Singh, Uday Pratap Singh, Riti Pathak, Prahlad Patel, and Narendra Singh Tomar from Madhya Pradesh; Kirori Lal Meena (Rajya Sabha MP), Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, and Diya Kumari from Rajasthan; and Gomti Sai and Arun Sao from Chhattisgarh. The resignations were a procedural step, as the Constitution prohibits an individual from concurrently holding positions as a Member of Parliament and a member of the Legislative Assembly of a state.

The resignations have triggered speculation about the potential appointment of new chief ministers for the states BJP won on Sunday: Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. There are indications that the party might announce these decisions shortly. A comprehensive meeting lasting nearly five hours, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party leader JP Nadda, took place at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence in Delhi on Wednesday.

BJP had fielded a total of 21 Members of Parliament, including 5 Union Ministers, in the various assembly elections conducted in November. The party had seven MPs in both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, four in Chhattisgarh, and three in Telangana.
