The West Bengal government has announced that the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ will be compulsory in schools across the state from Monday, in what is being seen as one of the first major education-related directives of the new government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
According to official instructions issued by the School Education Department, all state-run and aided schools have been directed to ensure that students sing the national song during morning assemblies before the start of classes. The order has been implemented with immediate effect.
Addressing students and members of the public after the declaration of Class 12 examination results, the Chief Minister said the move was aimed at strengthening patriotic values among students. “Vande Mataram” will now become a regular part of the daily school routine across Bengal, the government said.
In its circular to school authorities, the Education Department stated that the singing of the national song during morning prayers “should be made mandatory” and that all students must participate. Heads of institutions have also been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the directive.
