TMC MP Yusuf Pathan’s Father-in-Law Among 3 Arrested in Mumbai Assault Case

The father-in-law of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan was arrested on Monday along with his son and another relative for allegedly assaulting a man and his family in Mumbai’s Byculla area following a dispute over a water splash incident.

According to Byculla police, the incident took place on Saturday night, around 9 pm, when a local resident, Yusuf Khan (30), was returning home. As his car passed through a pothole, water splashed onto Shoaib Khan (35), who was standing nearby.

Yusuf Khan told police that he immediately stopped the car and apologised, but Shoaib allegedly began abusing him and smashed the car’s windshield with a bamboo stick. He then reportedly assaulted Yusuf Khan, leaving him injured.
After reaching home, Yusuf Khan’s family advised him to approach the police.

However, while on the way to the police station, the complainant and his relatives encountered Khalid Khan (Yusuf Pathan’s father-in-law), who, along with his son Umarshad Khan (35), Shoaib, and another accused, Shahbaz Pathan, allegedly confronted them, leading to another altercation.

Police said the accused attacked Yusuf Khan and his relatives using bamboo sticks and a baseball bat. In the assault, Yusuf Khan’s brother-in-law, Salman, sustained a fractured hand, while his uncle, Zaki Ahmed, suffered serious injuries.

While Shahbaz Pathan is currently absconding, the other three accused have been arrested. A case has been registered against them for assault and causing grievous injuries.

The defence counsel argued that the incident was a minor scuffle in which both sides were involved, but claimed that police had presented a one-sided account.

“The complainant and my clients both attacked each other, but the police have taken their side and portrayed it as if only my clients are at fault,” the lawyer said.

Police said the action was based on CCTV footage, witness statements, and the recovery of weapons, including bamboo sticks and a baseball bat. 

Investigators informed the court that the accused had been clearly identified from the witness account, CCTV footage, and by witnesses.

However, the accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody till May 2.
