Thunderstorm activity is expected to intensify across parts of West Bengal in the coming days, with the regional meteorological office forecasting widespread rain, gusty winds and possible hailstorms, offering relief from prevailing heat and humidity.
According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the formation of Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) storms across several districts, particularly in south Bengal. “Thunderstorm activity is likely to increase over multiple districts shortly,” officials indicated, adding that the changing weather pattern could bring much-needed respite from the ongoing discomfort.
The forecast suggests that at least 8–10 districts in south Bengal may witness thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph. In some areas, wind speeds could rise further, and isolated incidents of hail have not been ruled out.
Kolkata is also expected to be affected, with intermittent rain and gusty winds likely over the next few days. Meteorologists noted that the build-up of atmospheric instability, driven by high temperatures and moisture incursion, is creating favourable conditions for these storms.
The development comes amid a spell of oppressive heat and humidity across the state. Weather experts said the approaching thunderstorms could lead to a gradual dip in temperatures, bringing temporary relief to residents.
Officials have also issued advisories warning of lightning strikes and sudden wind surges during storm activity, urging people to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions.
The changing weather pattern is typical of the pre-monsoon season in eastern India, when Kalbaisakhi storms frequently occur due to the interaction of heat, moisture and atmospheric disturbances.
