West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday reacted sharply to the recent unrest in Kolkata’s Park Circus area, warning that incidents of violence and stone-pelting would not be tolerated under his administration.
Referring to the disturbances, Adhikari said, “Stone pelting on police stopped in Kashmir, it will stop in Kolkata too,” issuing what he described as a “final warning” to those attempting to create unrest in the city.
The Chief Minister alleged that certain groups were trying to disturb communal harmony and spread fear in sensitive pockets of Kolkata. He maintained that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in violence, intimidation, or attempts to destabilise law and order.
“In Bengal, people had become accustomed to a certain laxity—they felt that the government would not take any action against them. The police will now act strictly in accordance with the law," Adhikari said, adding, “gone are the days when police personnel would get injured while the Police Minister merely sat in an air-conditioned room, watching the things unfold—forget those days now. From this point forward, hooliganism will be eradicated from Bengal."
According to reports, nearly 40 people were arrested following the Park Circus incident as police intensified operations in the area. Adhikari directed law enforcement agencies to remain on high alert and ensure that “the law is applied equally to everyone.”
“Engaging in stone-pelting or vitiating the atmosphere by misusing religious slogans — none of this will be tolerated in Bengal under any circumstances," CM Adhikari emphasised.
In his remarks, the Chief Minister also criticised what he called years of “appeasement politics,” claiming that earlier administrations had allowed disruptive elements to operate freely.
“The government will now work for the people, not for political interests,” he had said earlier while addressing top bureaucrats at Nabanna.
Adhikari further appealed to residents not to pay attention to rumours or inflammatory social media content, urging citizens to cooperate with the administration to maintain peace in the city.
The protests at Park Circus broke out on Sunday against ‘buldozer demolition’ drive undertaken at Tiljala against alleged illegal construction following a fire at a factory, which claimed two lives.
On Sunday, locals staged protest stopping police vehicles, which later escalated into a full-blown skirmish leading to stone pelting. According to reports, some police vehicles were damaged and officers injured.
