Sourav Ganguly Urges 'Respect and Medical Care' for Imran Khan Amid Health Concerns in Custody

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has called for proper medical treatment and respectful handling of former Pakistan captain and ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently in jail custody, amid rising concerns about his health.

Ganguly’s remarks come at a time when questions have been raised about Khan’s medical condition while incarcerated. Speaking on the issue, Ganguly emphasised that regardless of political differences, a figure of Khan’s stature deserves humane treatment. “He took Pakistan to the world map, first as a captain and then as a Prime Minister. He must be looked after and respected,” Ganguly said, referring to Khan’s leadership during Pakistan’s 1992 Cricket World Cup victory and his later tenure as the country’s Prime Minister.

The former India skipper’s comments follow a joint appeal issued by 14 former international cricket captains, including Indian legends Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. The signatories urged the government of Pakistan to ensure humane treatment, adequate medical care and basic rights for Khan during his imprisonment.

In their appeal, the former captains expressed concern that Khan’s health had deteriorated in custody and stressed the need for immediate medical supervision. The statement avoided commenting on the legal proceedings against Khan, focusing instead on his wellbeing and the need for dignified treatment while due process continues.

Backing the appeal, Ganguly reiterated his hope for Khan’s recovery and proper care. “I hope his health recovers and I hope he gets the right treatment,” he said.

Ganguly’s remarks have since drawn attention across Indian and international media, amplifying calls from the cricketing fraternity for humane treatment and medical attention for the former Pakistan captain as legal proceedings continue.​
