Samrat Choudary crowned new ‘Samrat’ of Bihar; takes Nitish Kumar’s chair

BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary becomes the new Chief Minister of Bihar, making history as the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to directly head the state government. A senior BJP leader and former deputy Chief Minister, Choudhary was chosen as the leader of the BJP Legislative party after internal discussions. His selection serves as a significant moment for the BJP, which has long been a key player in Bihar politics but had not previously held the top post on it’s own. 

Choudhary’s rise comes at a time when the BJP is aiming to strengthen it’s independent leadership in the state. His appointment signals a shift towards a more direct BJP led governance model in the state. Reacting to the decision he thanked the party and called it an, “opportunity to serve the people of Bihar,” promising to meet public expectations with dedication. 

“This is not merely a position for me, but a sacred opportunity to serve the people of Bihar, to fulfill their trust and dreams. I pledge to live up to the expectations of one and all with complete dedication, commitment, and integrity,” he said in a post on X.

He further said, “Under the able leadership of the country's esteemed Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and the guidance of the honorable National President Shri @NitinNabin ji, I will remain continuously committed to taking Bihar to new heights of development, good governance, and prosperity.”

The development follows the resignation of Nitish Kumar, one of Bihar’s longest serving Chief Ministers. Kumar stepped down after a long political career in state leadership, during which he led multiple alliance government and played a central role in shaping Bihar’s governance . His tenure spanned nearly two decades, marked by alliances that shifted between the BJP and opposition parties at different times.

This came after Nitish Kumar held a last meeting with his Cabinet earlier today followed by dissolution. 

In a tweet following his resignation, Nitish Kumar said his government worked for every section of society across sectors such as education, health, electricity, with a special focus on women and youth. He said the new government will take forward the responsibilities and will have his “full cooperation and guidance.”

Kumar said, “We formed the NDA government in the state for the first time on November 24, 2005. Since then, the rule of law has been firmly established, and we have remained consistently committed to development. From the very beginning, our government has worked for every section of society like Hindus, Muslims, upper castes, backward classes, extremely backward classes, Dalits and Mahadalits.”

“The new government will now take forward the responsibilities, and it will have my full cooperation and guidance. I am confident that the state will continue to witness meaningful progress and move ahead on the path of development,” he further added.

With Nitish Kumar’s exit, the BJP government has moved quickly to assert leadership by putting forward Samrat Choudhary as the new face of governance. This change is being seen as the beginning of a new political phase in Bihar, where the BJP will now take direct responsibility for running the state government.
