Two FIRs have reportedly been registered in Punjab against Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak, days after he resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sandeep Pathak, when asked about the matter, said he was unaware of any such FIRs against him.
Pathak told news agency ANI, "I have no idea of any FIR against me."
According to sources, the cases have been filed under non bailable sections, although officials are yet to publicly confirm the exact nature of the charges.
Sources indicate that the cases may involve serious charges, including corruption and harassment, though these claims have not been independently confirmed by officials.
Amid reports of the FIRs on Saturday, Pathak was seen leaving his Delhi residence. When approached for questions, the Rajya Sabha MP was seen leaving in his car.
“Punjab Police is making efforts to arrest the accused as FIRs have been registered under non bailable sections” government sources said.
Pathak was a key organizational figure in AAP and played an important role in building the party’s presence in Punjab, particularly in his 2022 Assembly election victory. His recent exit is part of a broader political shift, with several AAP leaders switching to the BJP in a short span of time, significantly reducing AAP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha.
The timing of the FIRs has triggered a political row. The BJP leader Tarun Chugh has alleged that the cases reflect “political vendetta” by the AAP led Punjab government, suggesting that they were filed in response to Pathak’s departure from the party. “A palpable atmosphere of resentment against the AAP government has taken root in the minds of the people. It is out of this very frustration, despair, and angst that these vindictive actions are being carried out. However, the people of Punjab are not ones to be intimidated; Punjab will not bow down…,” Chugh told ANI.
The AAP leadership however has not issued a detailed response on the matter so far.
The development comes amid rising political tensions in Punjab, where party realignments and accusations between rivals have intensified. With investigations likely to proceed, more clarity is expected in the coming days.
Reports suggest that the Punjab Police may take further action in the case, and the possibility of arrest cannot be ruled out due to the non bailable nature of the charges.
However, in the absence of official confirmation and detailed disclosures, the full picture of the case remains unclear.
