Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of fostering division and hatred, while asserting that the Congress party remains committed to unity and social harmony.
Addressing a public rally in Biswanath district of Assam, Gandhi said, “The difference between the Congress and the BJP is clear. The Congress party works to unite people and spread love, while the BJP spreads hatred and divides society.”
He alleged that the BJP-led government in the state, headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has failed to meet public expectations and has instead prioritised politics that deepen social fault lines. “They are not working for the people of Assam. Their politics is about dividing communities and distracting from real issues,” Gandhi said.
The Congress leader also accused the ruling dispensation of corruption and governance failures, claiming that public resources were not being utilised effectively for development. He emphasised that the Congress, in contrast, aims to focus on welfare-driven governance and inclusive growth.
Invoking Assam’s cultural legacy, Gandhi said the state has historically stood for unity and coexistence. “Assam’s identity has always been about bringing people together. Its history teaches us to respect diversity and live in harmony,” he remarked, positioning the Congress ideology as aligned with these values.
Outlining his party’s vision, Gandhi spoke of economic and social measures aimed at supporting workers, farmers, and marginalised communities. He indicated that a Congress-led government would prioritise job creation, fair wages, and policies designed to reduce inequality.
The rally forms part of the Congress party’s broader political outreach in the region, as it seeks to consolidate support ahead of upcoming electoral contests. Gandhi’s remarks underline the party’s strategy of contrasting its message of inclusivity with what it describes as the BJP’s divisive politics.
With campaigning intensifying in Assam, both the Congress and the BJP are stepping up efforts to shape the political narrative in the run-up to future elections.
