Pawar Family Discusses Ajit Pawar Memorial in Baramati, Political Talks Put on Hold

Efforts are underway to build a memorial in Baramati in memory of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash on the 28th while traveling for election campaigning. Senior leader Sharad Pawar, along with Jay Pawar, is believed to have discussed Vidya Pratishthan as a possible site for the memorial.

A joint meeting of the Pawar family was held on Thursday to deliberate on the memorial and related matters. Those present included Pratibha Pawar, Sharad Pawar, Srinivas Pawar, Rajendra Pawar, Rohit Pawar, Ranjit Pawar, and trustees of Vidya Pratishthan. Discussions reportedly focused on the memorial, a proposed museum, and other non-political family matters.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, NCP SP leader Rohit Pawar said that no political discussions have taken place within the family since Ajit Pawar’s death. “The incident occurred on the 28th when Ajit Dada was heading out for campaigning. Today is the last day of the campaign. Ajit Pawar was a tall leader, and we appeal to people to support the candidates he stood for,” he said.

Rohit Pawar highlighted the role of Sharad Pawar as the guiding force of the family, both politically and socially. He said Sharad Pawar has always stood firmly with the family during difficult times and continues to guide them even after Ajit Pawar’s passing. He emphasized that discussions with Sharad Pawar have been limited to personal, trust-related, and social issues, with no political agenda involved.

He said there is a collective desire within the family and among the public to build a dignified memorial in Ajit Pawar’s name at an accessible location. Given Ajit Pawar’s 35–40 years in public life, the family is also considering setting up a museum documenting his political journey. A final decision on the location whether within Baramati city or elsewhere is expected in the coming days, following consultations with family members and trustees of concerned social institutions.

Rohit Pawar further stated that the family has consciously avoided taking any political position during this period of mourning. “It is emotionally difficult to discuss politics at this time. After the 9th, we will be able to speak more clearly,” he said, adding that he is not in a position to comment on political alliances or mergers.

Expressing concern over ongoing political allegations and counter-allegations in the state, Rohit Pawar said it was unfortunate that discussions had shifted away from Ajit Pawar’s legacy and work. “As a family member, it is painful to see his name being drawn into political controversies,” he said.

On the plane crash, Rohit Pawar said more details would be shared after the 9th. He stressed the importance of bringing the truth before the public and addressing unanswered questions. He added that the family expects transparency from the state and central governments, as well as the concerned company, so that public doubts surrounding the incident are resolved.​
