The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Friday announced that the re-examination for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2026 will be held on June 21, offering long-awaited clarity to more than 22 lakh medical aspirants affected by the cancellation of the original examination, owing to allegations of paper leak.
The fresh examination date was confirmed through an official announcement on the NTA’s X handle, days after the agency scrapped the May 3 examination over allegations of paper leaks and irregularities. According to the agency, the re-test will be conducted with the approval of the Government of India.
“NEET (UG) 2026 — Announcement of Exam Date. The National Testing Agency has decided to conduct the re-examination of NEET (UG) 2026 on Sunday, 21 June 2026, with the approval of the Government of India,” the NTA said in its official statement. The agency also urged candidates and parents to rely only on verified communication channels for updates related to the examination process. “Candidates and parents are requested to trust only the official channels of NTA,” it added.
The announcement comes after the NTA cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3 following allegations of malpractice linked to the test, plunging lakhs of students into uncertainty regarding admissions, counselling and future academic plans.
The cancellation, announced earlier this week, affected approximately 22.79 lakh registered candidates, making it one of the largest entrance examination disruptions in the country.
In an earlier notification issued on May 12, the NTA clarified that candidates would not have to complete the registration process again for the re-examination. The agency said registration data, candidature details and examination centre preferences submitted during the May examination cycle would automatically be carried forward to the rescheduled test. “No fresh registration will be required, and no additional examination fee will be charged,” the agency had stated.
The NTA also confirmed that examination fees already paid by candidates would be refunded, while the re-examination would be organised using the agency’s internal resources. The re-examination schedule comes even as the investigation into the alleged examination leak continues to widen.
On Thursday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) secured custody of five accused persons arrested in connection with the alleged NEET-UG paper leak case and detained two additional suspects. A court granted the agency seven days’ custody of the accused and observed that the allegations suggested the existence of an “organised gang” allegedly involved in leaking and distributing confidential examination material for financial gain.
According to investigators, the involvement of public officials in the alleged irregularities cannot yet be ruled out, and the agency is also probing whether any insider within the NTA may have played a role. The five accused, identified as Shubham Khairnar from Nashik, Mangilal Biwal, Vikas Biwal, Dinesh Biwal from Jaipur, and Yash Yadav from Gurugram, were brought into CBI custody after transit remands were secured from different states.
