Mumbai, the country’s financial capital, has ranked second among major metropolitan cities in crimes against women, according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) Crime in India 2024 report. In 2024.
Mumbai recorded 6,358 cases of crimes against women. Only Delhi reported a higher number, with 13,396 cases. The report also paints a concerning picture of rising economic offences, cybercrime, and crimes against children and senior citizens in Maharashtra.
According to the NCRB report, Maharashtra ranked second in the country in crimes against women, with a total of 47,954 cases, while Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 66,398 cases. However, in terms of crime rate, Telangana ranked highest. Apart from Mumbai, Pune recorded 2,631 such cases, while Nagpur reported 1,513.
The report highlights Maharashtra’s alarming position in crimes against children, with the state recording 24,171 cases the highest in the country. Uttar Pradesh followed with 22,222 cases. Among metropolitan cities, Mumbai ranked second after Delhi in crimes against children, with 3,374 cases reported.
Mumbai also topped the list of 19 major metropolitan cities in economic offences, with 7,771 cases involving fraud, forgery, criminal breach of trust, and related offences. At the state level, Maharashtra ranked third with 20,083 cases, behind Telangana and Rajasthan.
In cybercrime, Maharashtra ranked fourth in the country, recording 9,922 cases. Among cities, Bengaluru ranked first, while Mumbai came second with 4,939 cybercrime cases.
Under the Prevention of Corruption Act, Maharashtra ranked first nationwide, with 721 cases registered, including 683 trap cases in which government officials were allegedly caught accepting bribes red-handed. Tamil Nadu was second with 364 cases.
Maharashtra also ranked second in crimes against senior citizens, recording 4,918 cases, while Mumbai alone reported 791 such incidents.
In cases of deaths in police custody, Maharashtra ranked second with 10 cases, while Gujarat topped the list with 17.
However, the NCRB clarified in the report that a rise in registered crime cases does not always indicate an actual increase in crime.
According to the bureau, improved reporting mechanisms such as e-FIRs, women’s help desks, and citizen-centric policing initiatives have also contributed to higher registration of cases, leading to an apparent increase in crime statistics.
