Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday launched a strong attack on Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as the “most rejected commodity in Indian politics” and asserting that voters across the country have repeatedly turned him down.
Responding to Gandhi’s allegation that PM Modi was a “compromised PM”, Fadnavis questioned the Congress leader’s political standing, saying public acceptance is the true measure of relevance in a democracy. “In a democracy, the people’s acceptance is what matters. Rahul Gandhi has been rejected repeatedly by the people and by every state. So, do you really accord him any significance?” he said.
Throwing his weight behind the Prime Minister, Fadnavis said Modi continues to enjoy strong public support, adding, “The nation stands with Modi Ji; the nation stands behind Modi Ji; and time and again, the nation bestows its blessings upon Modi Ji.”
The sharp exchange comes as the BJP and the Opposition intensify their political sparring over the Prime Minister’s recent remarks urging citizens to contribute towards helping the country navigate global economic uncertainty amid the ongoing Iran-US conflict.
Rahul Gandhi had on Sunday criticised Modi’s appeal, accusing the government of passing the burden of economic challenges onto ordinary citizens instead of taking responsibility.
In a post on X, Gandhi said, “Modi ji demanded sacrifices from the public yesterday, don’t buy gold, don’t go abroad, use less petrol, cut down on fertiliser and cooking oil, take the metro, work from home. These aren’t sermons, these are proofs of failure.”
He further alleged that after 12 years in power, the Centre was asking citizens to change their way of life because of its own policy shortcomings. “Every time, they shift the responsibility onto the people so they can escape accountability themselves,” he said, while once again referring to Modi as a “Compromised PM”.
