Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee on Saturday announced the launch of two new initiatives aimed at further enhancing women’s safety and confidence across Kolkata — dedicated ‘Pink Booths’ and all-women mobile patrol teams named ‘SHINING’.
In a statement shared on X, the Chief Minister confirmed that Kolkata Police will establish several all-women ‘Pink Booths’ at key intersections throughout the city. Operational from evening until midnight, these booths will be staffed exclusively by women police officers, enabling women citizens to directly seek assistance, guidance, and support in a secure and approachable environment.
Complementing this initiative, the government will deploy multiple all-women mobile patrol units under the banner ‘SHINING’. These patrol teams will operate daily from 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM, focusing on major city corridors, including the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and other prominent routes frequently used by working women during late hours. The patrols are intended to enhance visibility, responsiveness, and preventive security measures during night-time hours.
Reaffirming her administration’s commitment to public safety, the Chief Minister stated that Kolkata continues to rank among the safest metropolitan cities in the country. She expressed confidence that the introduction of these two targeted initiatives will significantly reinforce existing safety mechanisms and further strengthen women’s sense of security across the city.
Detailed operational guidelines and deployment strategies are expected to be released by Kolkata Police officials in due course.
