The political heat in West Bengal has intensified sharply as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit out at Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the BJP’s freshly released “chargesheet” document targeting the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Shah unveiled the document on Saturday, listing alleged failures in governance, corruption, law and order, women’s safety, and illegal infiltration during the TMC’s 15-year rule.
The BJP has positioned the “Abhiyognama” (chargesheet) as a key campaign tool ahead of the two-phase Assembly elections scheduled for April 23 and 29, with results expected on May 4. Party leaders plan to take the document door-to-door to highlight what they call misrule, framing the contest as a choice between “fear and trust” and linking it to broader national security concerns.
Speaking at a rally in Purulia district’s Manbazar on Sunday, Mamata Banerjee turned the tables, declaring that it is the BJP and Amit Shah who deserve to be chargesheeted for their actions. She rejected the accusations outright and accused the saffron party of playing politics of character assassination.
Mamata Banerjee said:“They (BJP) say I moved around with bandages on. I fought death several times. Why don’t they check those medical reports? Don’t you have any shame? Before the last (2021) election you purposely hurt me in the leg. Despite that, I toured Bengal in a wheelchair with a cast because I am strong inside.”
She further alleged a deeper conspiracy without naming Shah directly: “Are they planning to kill me now? Why else will he make a statement like that? His words make it apparent that a conspiracy has been hatched. Character assassination is part of such conspiracies.”
The Chief Minister also warned that a BJP government would scrap popular welfare schemes like ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ for women and impose restrictions on people’s choices, including dietary preferences. She asserted that the real verdict would come from the people on election day.
The exchange has escalated tensions in an already charged atmosphere, with the TMC defending its record and accusing the BJP of polarising the state while failing on issues like central fund allocation and national concerns such as violence in Manipur. The BJP, on the other hand, continues to spotlight alleged TMC lapses in infiltration control, corruption scandals, and administrative failures.
