Kolkata Jolted by 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake; Tremors Felt Across City

Kolkata experienced strong tremors on Friday afternoon, leaving residents alarmed as buildings shook across several neighbourhoods. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale. The tremor originated at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located in southwestern Bangladesh. The seismic event was recorded at 1:52 pm local time.

Earlier estimates by the US Geological Survey (USGS) placed the magnitude at 5.3. The USGS stated that the epicentre lay approximately 26 kilometres south-east of Taki in West Bengal.

Differences in initial magnitude readings are not unusual, as seismic agencies often revise their assessments after analysing more comprehensive data.

The tremors were felt widely across Kolkata and in adjoining districts, particularly in areas close to the India–Bangladesh border. In several parts of the city, residents reported ceiling fans swaying, windows rattling and furniture shifting. The shaking was said to be more pronounced in multi-storey buildings.

People in many residential complexes rushed outdoors as the ground began to move. Visuals circulating on social media showed individuals gathering in open spaces shortly after the tremors subsided.

As of now, authorities have not reported any casualties or structural damage. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation.​
