Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday found himself at the centre of a political row after remarks made during a press conference about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
While criticising the AIADMK’s alliance with the BJP ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections, Kharge used the word “terrorist” in reference to the Prime Minister. His comment quickly drew sharp reactions, prompting him to clarify his statement when questioned by reporters.
Kharge said his remark had been misunderstood. He explained that he did not literally call the Prime Minister a terrorist, but meant that Modi’s style of functioning “terrorises” political opponents and the public.
He alleged that central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax Department and CBI were being used to pressure rivals, and said his comment should be seen in that context.
The Congress leader had earlier questioned how the AIADMK, which draws ideological inspiration from leaders like Annadurai and Periyar, could align with the BJP. He argued that such a partnership goes against the principles of social justice and equality associated with those leaders.
He also reiterated that the Congress-DMK alliance would continue to focus on welfare measures, inclusive development, education and healthcare.
The BJP, however, reacted strongly. Party leaders accused the Congress of repeatedly using abusive language against the Prime Minister. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari described the Congress as an “Urban Naxal” party and alleged that such statements reflected a pattern of hostile rhetoric.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal also criticised Kharge’s remarks, calling them an insult to both the Prime Minister and the electorate. He demanded an apology from the Congress leadership, including Rahul Gandhi and DMK leader M. K. Stalin.
