Kamra, Andhare Appear Before Privileges Panel; Hearing Deferred to March 10

Comedian Kunal Kamra and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare appeared before the Maharashtra legislature’s Committee of Privileges at Vidhan Bhavan on Tuesday, in connection with a breach of privilege motion over a parody song referencing Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The proceedings were deferred after BJP leader Pravin Darekar, the original complainant, did not attend the hearing.

Committee chairman Prasad Lad said that, in accordance with procedure, the statements of Kamra and Andhare would be recorded after Darekar’s deposition.

The motion stems from a satirical song performed by Kamra at a Mumbai studio, which was later shared on social media by Andhare. Darekar subsequently moved the breach of privilege proposal against both.

Speaking to reporters, Kamra said, “I am a person who believes in the Constitution. For some reason, the hearing did not take place today. Whenever I am called again, I will appear. The date of March 10 has been communicated unofficially, I will be present.”

When asked whether he felt safe following earlier vandalism by Shiv Sena workers over the controversy, Kamra responded, “I have no fear of any attack.” On criticism from the ruling side, he added, “Why should I say only what those in power like? There are others for that.”

Kamra also indicated that he intends to organise a comedy show in Mumbai again, saying, “I will definitely organise one.”

However Sushma Andhare questioned why the complainant’s statement had not been recorded first and alleged political motivation behind the motion.

The next hearing has been scheduled for March 10, when both sides are expected to present their testimonies.
