In a dramatic reshuffle amid the ongoing election period, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalighat Police Station in Kolkata has been changed yet again—marking the fourth such switch in just 36 days.
The latest move comes within 24 hours of the previous appointment. Chameli Mukhopadhyay, who was named OC after the suspension of Gautam Das, has now been removed, with Balai Bag taking charge of the post. The order was issued by Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand.
Balai Bag, who was serving as the additional OC of Polerhat Police Station in the Bhangar division, has now been transferred to Kalighat under the South Division.
The frequent reshuffling began after the Election Commission initiated a series of administrative changes in police postings following the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Kalighat, located in the politically significant Bhabanipur constituency, has been under particular scrutiny.
The controversy intensified after former OC Gautam Das was suspended over a social media post. He allegedly shared a photograph of himself in police uniform holding an advanced firearm with the caption “ready for new assignment,” which drew objections from the Trinamool Congress.
Following his suspension, Chameli Mukhopadhyay—previously OC of Ultadanga Women Police Station—was appointed. However, that decision was swiftly revoked within hours, leading to the latest appointment of Balai Bag.
While no official reason has been stated for the rapid reversal, sources suggest the ongoing controversy linked to the firearm post played a key role in the administrative decisions.
The repeated changes highlight the heightened sensitivity around law enforcement roles during elections, especially in high-profile constituencies like Bhabanipur.
