An eminent cardiologist by profession, Dr. P K Hazra is viral on social media after his unique proposition caught netizens’ eyes. According to an advertisement he posted online, the Kolkata-based cardiologist decided to offer at least Rs. 500 discount to all his patients who would chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ in front of him.
Dr. Hazra introduced this ‘special announcement’ on his Facebook page. It said, “With the blessings of Jai Shree Ram, to make all healthcare more accessible and affordable for all- Patients who say “Jai Shree Ram” will receive a special discount on the doctor’s consultation fee.”
He believes “health is wealth” and his vision is simply to promote affordable healthcare. “Let healthcare be easy and within the reach for everyone,” he wrote on his advertisement.
Speaking about what inspired him to do this, Dr. Hazra told Telegraph that he believed that “Jai Shree Ram” is not a religious slogan and must it be considered as “political one”. He told the leading daily that he was “inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).”
Dr. Hazra cited examples of late Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a stalwart politician, Congressman and a pro physician. “Why can’t I say Jai Shree Ram? Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was Congress politician who later became Chief Minister of Bengal. There are doctors who associate themselves with CPM and say ‘Lal Saalam,” he stated adding that one must not be refrained from holding a political view just because of his profession.
In his 30 years of career, Dr. Hazra has treated many patients with utmost care. He revealed that the “offer” was for his patients who come to visit him at his chamber at his private clinic. He hopes to make healthcare affordable to his patients, thus, reduced his consultation fees to half from Rs. 2000.
Dr. Hazra is an alumnus of Calcutta Medical College and is currently the interventional cardiology director at Manipal Hospital.
