India has successfully carried out the maiden flight-trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system, marking another milestone in the country’s push towards indigenous defence technology and precision strike capability.
The test was jointly conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Air Force off the coast of Odisha.
TARA is being described as India’s first indigenously-developed glide weapon system capable of transforming conventional unguided aerial warheads into precision-guided munitions designed to accurately strike ground targets.
Developed by Research Centre Imarat in collaboration with several other DRDO laboratories, the system is intended to significantly improve the operational range, lethality and targeting accuracy of low-cost aerial weapons.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the weapon uses a modular range-extension kit that can be integrated with existing warheads, enabling them to function as guided strike systems without the need for entirely new munitions.
Officials said the system incorporates advanced indigenous technologies while maintaining relatively low production costs, making it a cost-effective force multiplier for the armed forces.
The project has been developed in partnership with Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPPs) and multiple Indian defence manufacturers. Production activity for the system has already commenced, signalling the beginning of its transition from development to operational deployment.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Air Force and industry stakeholders following the successful trial. He described the achievement as “a significant development” in strengthening India’s indigenous defence ecosystem and enhancing self-reliance in advanced military technologies.
Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat also lauded the teams involved in the project, praising the efforts of scientists, engineers and industry collaborators who contributed to the successful maiden test.
The successful trial comes amid India’s broader push to expand domestic defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported weapon systems under the government’s self-reliance initiative in the strategic sector.
