Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav is scheduled to meet Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Thursday, in what is being seen as a concerted effort by the INDIA bloc to regroup after the Trinamool Congress’s bruising defeat in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections.
The meeting assumes significance as the opposition alliance attempts to close ranks following TMC’s poor showing, where the party was reduced to a distant second behind the BJP. Banerjee has publicly blamed the Election Commission of India for what she described as “unfair elections” marked by alleged irregularities, including issues with voter lists and the Special Intensive Revision process. She has refused to resign, asserting a “moral victory” and vowing to strengthen the INDIA front as a “free bird” unburdened by state power constraints.
According to party insiders, Akhilesh Yadav’s visit is not merely a courtesy call but a deliberate show of solidarity. The SP chief had earlier extended strong support to Banerjee when the poll results were still trickling in, publicly backing her allegations against the poll panel and assuring her of the alliance’s backing. Sources said the Thursday meeting will focus on assessing the ground situation in Bengal and exploring ways to coordinate future political strategies at the national level.
The development comes amid growing chatter within opposition circles about convening a broader INDIA bloc meeting later this month. Top sources told News The Truth that the Congress is pushing for the gathering to be held in Delhi to facilitate wider participation from across the country. However, there is also a distinct possibility of the meeting shifting to Kolkata, aimed at underscoring the perceived injustice meted out to Mamata Banerjee and the TMC by the Election Commission. “The idea is to stand firmly with the leader who has been wronged,” a senior opposition leader said on condition of anonymity. “Holding it in Kolkata would send a strong message.”
Akhilesh Yadav is not the only INDIA constituent to rally behind Banerjee. Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav had also promptly reached out, offering moral and political support in the immediate aftermath of the results. Their gestures were widely interpreted as an attempt to prevent any sense of isolation within the bloc, which had already weathered several internal differences since the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Political observers note that the Bengal verdict has come as a reality check for the opposition. The BJP’s surge to around 206 seats has altered the power dynamics in eastern India and raised questions about the INDIA alliance’s ability to counter the ruling party’s organisational machinery at the state level. Yet, rather than triggering fresh recriminations, the setback appears to have prompted a quiet recalibration.
Akhilesh Yadav, who has consistently advocated for opposition unity since the formation of the INDIA bloc, is expected to emphasise the need for a coordinated approach ahead of upcoming polls in other states. His visit also carries symbolic weight given the Samajwadi Party’s own experience of navigating challenging electoral battles in Uttar Pradesh while remaining a key pillar of the alliance.
Banerjee, for her part, has repeatedly signalled her commitment to the INDIA platform even as she navigates the new political reality in Bengal. In recent interactions with the media, she has described the alliance as essential for safeguarding democratic values and federalism.
With Akhilesh Yadav’s arrival on Thursday, the focus now shifts to whether this bilateral engagement can translate into concrete steps for the larger INDIA meeting. Sources indicated that both leaders are likely to discuss not just Bengal-specific issues but also the broader roadmap for the opposition’s collective response to the challenges ahead.
As the opposition grapples with the post-poll scenario, Thursday’s meeting could mark the beginning of a renewed phase of coordination - one that seeks to turn adversity into an opportunity for tighter unity. While the INDIA block could manage to restrict BJP to 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, but BJP and PM Modi had reversed elections to their favour in every following state elections including - Maharashtra, Haryana, Delhi and now Bengal. In all these elections INDIA either failed to unite or failed to win against BJP.
