Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take immediate action against the R.G. Kar victim’s mother, who is contesting as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Panihati, over alleged derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The controversy erupted after a video of the candidate’s comments went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from the ruling TMC. The Sreerampore MP wrote a letter to the poll body, calling for their urgent intervention into the matter.
Sharing the now viral video on his social media platform “X”, he condemned the remarks, stating that such remarks “undermine the principles of free and fair elections.” “Such conduct is in gross violation of the Model Code of Conduct laid down by the Election Commission of India. The use of abusive language and issuance of threats during an electoral process undermines the principles of free and fair elections and creates an atmosphere of fear and hostility among the public,” he wrote.
Kalyan Banerjee added that the incident appeared to be a deliberate attempt to vitiate the electoral atmosphere. He cautioned that if left unchecked, such actions could set a “dangerous” precedent, and urged the ECI to take cognisance of the matter, order an inquiry, and initiate prompt action against the BJP candidate.
The row centres on a video in which the victim’s mother is seen speaking to a local media outlet and making threatening remarks directed at the Chief Minister. “If I meet her (CM), then I will drag her by her hair. After this, her place will be inside a jail. Either I will put her in jail, or put her inside a drain and beat her,” she is heard saying in the clip.
The incident has intensified political tensions in West Bengal ahead of the elections, with the matter now before the Election Commission as calls grow for action over the alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
