Fresh violence and deepening ethnic tensions have once again pushed Manipur into crisis, with state Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam claiming that more than 38 people belonging to the Kuki and Naga communities are currently being held hostage by various groups across the state. The revelation came amid renewed clashes and targeted killings in several hill districts.
Addressing reporters on Thursday, Konthoujam said the state government was in active talks with civil society organisations and political leaders to secure the release of those allegedly detained. “In total, more than 38 people from both the communities were detained by different groups. We are actively holding discussions with civil society groups and political leaders to secure their release,” the minister said according to PTI report.
The statement came a day after fresh violence erupted in Kangpokpi district, where suspected militants allegedly shot dead three church leaders and injured four others. In a separate incident in Noney district, unidentified gunmen reportedly opened fire on a civilian and his wife, killing the man and seriously injuring the woman. Officials said the attacks have intensified fear and uncertainty in several sensitive areas of the state.
Security forces have been deployed in vulnerable pockets following the violence, while shutdowns and protests were reported in parts of the hill districts after news of the killings spread. Local organisations have demanded immediate arrests and stronger security arrangements to prevent further escalation.
Manipur has remained volatile since ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities broke out in May 2023, leading to prolonged unrest, large-scale displacement and hundreds of deaths. Despite periods of relative calm, sporadic violence, militant attacks and allegations of abductions have continued to surface from different districts.
The latest incidents have renewed concerns over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state, with opposition parties and rights groups questioning the effectiveness of ongoing peace efforts. Officials, however, said negotiations are underway and appealed for restraint to prevent further communal tension.
