The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated first-time MLA Rathindra Bose for the post of Speaker of the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly, signalling the party leadership’s attempt to project a fresh face in one of the most important constitutional positions in the state.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Chief Minister and Leader of the House Suvendu Adhikari, who said BJP legislator Rathindra Bose from the Cooch Behar Dakshin constituency would be the party’s official nominee for the Speaker’s election scheduled to be held on Friday. With the BJP holding a comfortable majority in the 294-member Assembly after its massive victory in the 2026 elections, Bose is widely expected to be elected unopposed.
In a statement posted on social media, Adhikari said, “Shri Rathindra Bose… has been nominated as our candidate for the post of Hon’ble Speaker of the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly.” He further expressed hope that Bose’s candidature would receive support “from one and all” and that he would be elected unanimously.
Rathindra Bose was elected to the Assembly for the first time from Cooch Behar Dakshin in the recently concluded Assembly elections, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Avijit De Bhowmik by a margin of more than 23,000 votes. His elevation to the Speaker’s post has surprised many political observers, as senior BJP leader and veteran legislator Tapas Roy was widely considered the frontrunner for the role after being appointed pro-tem Speaker earlier this week.
Reacting to his nomination, Bose said he would discharge his constitutional responsibilities with the spirit of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” if elected to the post. Party leaders described him as a disciplined organisational figure with strong grassroots connections in North Bengal.
The election for the Speaker’s post comes amid the formation of Bengal’s first BJP-led government, following the party’s landmark victory in the 2026 Assembly elections in which it secured 207 seats and ended the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.
