An FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station over allegations of making provocative speeches during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign.
The case stems from a complaint filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar, who alleged that Banerjee delivered inflammatory remarks at multiple campaign events held between April 27 and May 3, allegedly promoting hostility and disturbing public order.
According to reports, Sarkar submitted his complaint on May 5, a day after the Assembly election results were declared. The complaint was initially lodged at Baguiati Police Station before being formally converted into an FIR at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station on May 15 at 2:45 pm. The FIR alleges that Banerjee’s speeches contained “provocative, threatening and inflammatory” content capable of disturbing communal harmony and triggering unrest.
Police have booked the Diamond Harbour MP under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to promoting enmity, criminal intimidation and acts likely to disturb public tranquillity. The case has also invoked Sections 123(2) and 125 of the Representation of the People Act, dealing with electoral misconduct and promotion of enmity during elections.
According to the complaint, Abhishek Banerjee allegedly made threatening remarks aimed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah during campaign events. Rajib Sarkar submitted links to several speeches as evidence and referred to a purported remark allegedly made by Banerjee at a pre-election event in Kolkata. “I will see who comes to save them on May 4. I will see which godfather from Delhi comes to their rescue,” the complaint quoted Abhishek Banerjee as saying.
The FIR further alleges that aggressive language was used against opposition workers during public gatherings and that the remarks had the potential to create public disorder. Sub-Inspector Somnath Singha Roy has been assigned to investigate the matter.
Reacting to the development, BJP leader and West Bengal Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development Dilip Ghosh said complaints that were once suppressed due to fear were now surfacing. “Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee and their leaders have acted tyrannically. People did not complain at that time because of fear. However, they are now ready to complain, and the police are ready to act on it, so justice will be served,” Ghosh said.
