A 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped inside a private sleeper bus in Delhi, in a case that has once again triggered serious concerns over women’s safety in the national capital. Delhi Police have arrested the driver and conductor of the bus following the survivor’s complaint and seized the vehicle used in the alleged crime.
According to police sources, the incident took place on the night of May 11 in the Rani Bagh-Nangloi area of West Delhi. The woman, who works at a factory in Mangolpuri, alleged that she was lured onto the sleeper bus before being sexually assaulted by the two accused while the vehicle was moving through parts of the city for nearly two hours.
Based on the survivor’s statement, an FIR was registered at Rani Bagh Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita dealing with rape, gang rape and common intention. Police said the woman underwent a medical examination after filing the complaint.
Officials confirmed that both accused — identified as the bus driver and conductor — were taken into custody shortly after the complaint was lodged. “The bus used in the incident has also been seized as part of the investigation,” police sources said.
The incident has sparked political outrage and renewed comparisons with the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case, which had similarly involved a private bus in Delhi and led to nationwide protests demanding stronger safeguards for women. Opposition leaders described the latest case as a “big shame” for the capital and questioned the state of public safety despite repeated assurances from authorities.
Delhi Police have not yet issued a detailed public statement on the progress of the investigation, but officials said further forensic examination and questioning of the accused are underway. Authorities are also examining CCTV footage and route details of the bus to reconstruct the sequence of events.
